This song feels like the end credits to someone’s story. Something that has strived to achieve and won but there have been consequences. Let’s take a hero, someone who has gone through hell and back to make a change that would benefit everyone. But there was a price for every step, sacrifices made, friendships and relationships broken, they can never return to the innocence they once had. Whatever view they had of the world before has been shattered and they realize that the world they knew will forever be changed. Maybe the hero was wounded in battle and is slowly inching towards his climatic death, maybe they’re surrounded by friends and family, people who will remember his sacrifice. Or maybe they’re all alone, no one to remember their name or what deeds they have committed to provide a better future for everyone, they will only be remembered as a speck of dust in a vast universe where their story will disappear unless someone finds it and retells it to anyone who will listen. How about a villain? Maybe not the one who plans to destroy the world or conquer it, but a sympathetic one. Someone who has lost everything in their life because of something the hero has done whether by purpose or accident. Everything they strive to achieve is based on anger and judgment, thinking that there are no good people left in the world and their form of Justice is twisted. Maybe after all is said and done, they lay dying from the battle and notice the hero just a few feet from them, in the same situation. It dawns on the villain that this hero, this mortal being, this human who sacrificed everything is now dying alongside them and trying to reassure that they will not be alone in the next life. It becomes clear to the villain that they were wrong, there are still good people left. Maybe the villain gets away and they realize that the hero is just like them, someone is putting everything on the line to save the last remaining people they care about and put an end to the madness. It may not be a change of heart but the villain abandons their life of evil and goes into hiding, never to see the light of day or faces of people ever again. I didn’t know that a song from a cartoon about a devil dog would stir up a lot of emotions but this is just my interpretation of it. Feel free to judge it if you will, but I do think this song is good in every aspect of the way it is sung.
